Hillier Flips in ‘C’ Feature in Summer Nationals Opener
MECHANICSBURG, PA (July 19) – World of Outlaws Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year contender Chad Hillier’s
night ended early Thursday when he flipped in the “C” Feature on opening
night of the Cleveland Brothers Summer Nationals at Williams Grove
Speedway.
Hillier, the
only driver to win all three sprint car championships at Skagit Speedway,
was trying to pass Craig Keel when their first-lap collision sent the #5C
DIRT Inc. Maxim tumbling end-over-end.
Hillier’s
17.800-second, 101.124-MPH lap around the legendary half-mile oval was the
44th-fastest in the 50-car field, .716 seconds off fast-qualifier Donny
Schatz’ pace. Chad
finished 10th in the Fourth Heat Race.
“We were
pretty good in hot laps, but we missed it on the gear for the part of
racetrack I tried to run in qualifying,” Hillier said. “In the heat race,
the setup wasn’t quite right, but we had the gear better.
“We were
actually pretty good in the ‘C.’ I was following the #9 car and he was a
little indecisive where he was going. We pitched it sideways on the top of
the racetrack and caught his right rear tire and went over. It tore the top
wing off and pushed the left rear of the car forward three or four inches,
so we’re going to have to build a new car. I’m sure we’ll be better with
the new car Friday.”
The Cleveland
Brothers Summer Nationals continues at Williams Grove Speedway Friday and
Saturday. The World of Outlaws will run a single-program event at Lebanon
Valley Speedway in West Lebanon , NY , Sunday.
