Hillier Has Mixed Emotions About Leaving ‘The Grove’
MECHANICSBURG,
PA (July 21) – Williams Grove Speedway hasn’t been kind to Chad Hillier and
DIRT Inc. this season, but the World of Outlaws Kevin Gobrecht
Rookie of the Year contender has mixed emotions about leaving the half-mile
oval.
“In a way, I was glad
to see Williams Grove in our rear-view mirror … but I almost wish we could
race it more often so we could get better there,” Hillier said after
Saturday’s Cleveland Brothers Summer Nationals finale. “It’s a tough place
to race, but it was tough for other guys, too.”
Hillier, who ranked 39th
in the preliminary program point standings, finished 11th in
Saturday’s Second Heat Race and third in the “C” Feature – 3.295 seconds
away from qualifying for the “B.”
“It wasn’t the best
night, but we found a few things that made me more comfortable racing
there,” Hillier said. “Unfortunately, we weren’t able to transfer out of
the ‘C’ and build on that for the ‘B,’ but that’s the way it goes
sometimes. First and second (Jac Haudenschild and Tony Bruce Jr.) got away from us, but
the car felt pretty good. We just weren’t quite good enough. Our crew is
working well together though. We’re an inexperienced team now, but it’s
good that we’re all learning together.”
Hillier hopes the
knowledge the team gained at Williams Grove will help him run well in his
first race at Lebanon Valley Speedway Sunday.
“ Lebanon Valley ’s straightaways
aren’t as long as Williams Grove’s, but we should be able to use some of
what we learned Saturday,” Hillier said. “We used a little different bar
combination that helped us some. Lebanon
Valley is usually
pretty slick. It’s deceiving; if you think there’s any moisture, you can
forget about it. I’ve only been there once before, and that was when I was
a crew member for the Selma Shell team. Hopefully, we will run well there.”
