Qualifying Problems Plague Hillier at Ohsweken
OHSWEKEN, ONTARIO, CANADA (July 25) – A rookie mistake kept
Chad Hillier from qualifying well, and led to a disappointing finish in
Wednesday’s World of Outlaws Six Nations Showdown at Ohsweken
Speedway.
Hillier’s 13.434-second
lap in the #5C DIRT Inc. Maxim was the 26th-fastest in the
37-car field in the series’ inaugural event at the semi-banked, 3/8-mile
oval.
“We made a bad call on
our gear selection in qualifying and it put us behind the eight-ball,”
Hillier said. “Once we sorted that out, we weren’t too bad. We just ran too
short of a gear. If we had used a taller gear, I think we could have built
more speed. We were running out of speed about half-way down the
straightaway, and that really hurt us for the rest of the night. It was a
rookie mistake, I suppose.
The World of Outlaws
Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year contender
finished sixth in the Second Heat Race and qualified for the main event
finishing second in the “B” Feature, .423 seconds ahead of series veteran
Terry McCarl.
“We didn’t get much
done in the heat race, but we were pretty good in the ‘B,’” Hillier said.
Hillier started outside
the 12th row and finished 23rd in the “A” Feature.
“We made some wrong
calls and used our tires up early in the feature, so we never really got
going,” Chad
said. “It was frustrating, but I’m glad we figured out where we went wrong
in qualifying.”
Hillier battled McCarl again in the 30-lap main event, passing him for
20th place during the fifth lap and exchanging the position
several more times.
“He got going pretty good, but he spun out and had to go to the back where I
was,” Chad
said. “He managed to get going forward, passing some cars on the restarts.
We couldn’t get off on the bottom. We were better on the top, but the car
didn’t have much forward bite and it hurt us.
“It wasn’t the best
night, but it was an OK trip to Canada . It was a nice facility. They did a really good job with
the track, and they had a laser light show that the fans really enjoyed.
They had a great crowd; I’m sure it was sold out.”
Hillier and DIRT Inc.
will be back in action Friday at I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, MI, Friday and K-C Raceway in Chillicothe, OH, Saturday.
“As I recall, it’s a
big half-mile,” Hillier said. “We’re looking forward to it. We have a tough
drive after the races, all the way to Chillicothe . The car checked out well, so we should be ready to go
this weekend.”
