Hillier Loses Fifth Place in 19th-Lap Crash

BEAVER DAM, WI (August 3) – Chad Hillier lost a chance to record his first top-five finish in World of Outlaws competition Friday at Charter Raceway Park when he crashed into Terry McCarl during a 19th-lap restart.

Hillier, who started outside the 10th row on the original start, moved up to the seventh row after two crashes and a caution involving 21 of the 24 drivers in the field marred the beginning of the 40-lap main event. The World of Outlaws Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year contender passed Jason Sides and Jac Haudenschild during the seventh and eighth laps and was challenging for fourth place when the #5C DIRT Inc. Maxim collided with McCarl midway through the “A” Feature.

“A lot of guys were bitten early on … we got it later,” said Hillier, who was credited with 18th place. “We were running really well – we were all over the back of McCarl – and I think we had a shot at a top-five; maybe even a top-three. But, on the restart, I misjudged what he was doing. He checked up in the middle of the corner and I got into the back of him and tipped over.

“I don’t know if it was a full moon or what, but a lot of guys had a tough couple of starts. We were just fortunate enough to dodge those cleanly. I’m frustrated with myself for making a mistake like that. We had one of the faster cars and we had track position, which was really important. The track was pretty hooked up and rough in places. We were doing a good job of running the smooth part of the racetrack, but we just misjudged what Terry was going to do. We had a good car, but it’s just one of those deals. We hope to have a better time Saturday.”

Hillier was the 20th-fastest qualifier in the 33-car field with a 12.026-second lap around the high-banked, 3/10-mile oval, .337 seconds off Joey Saldana’s pace-setting lap. The only driver to win all three sprint car racing championships at Skagit Speedway finished third in the Fourth Heat Race.

Hillier and DIRT will return to Charter Raceway Park for another World of Outlaws racing program Saturday.
