Hillier Runs 20th in Magic
City Showdown
MINOT, ND (August 14) – Chad Hillier
maintained 19th place in the World of Outlaws point standings
with a 20th-place finish in Tuesday’s Second Annual Magic City Showdown at Nodak Speedway.
Hillier, who recorded
his 24th top-20 finish of the season, left “The Playground of
Power” with a one-point advantage over fellow Kevin Gobrecht
Rookie of the Year candidate Sam Hafertepe Jr.
“Sam has been running
pretty consistent lately, so we need to put together some better nights,” Chad said.
“We need to start running a lot better so we don’t have to worry about that
kind of stuff. We have plenty to be concerned about out here already.”
Hillier’s 13.890-second
lap around the high-banked, 3/8-mile oval was the 20th-fastest
in the 30-car field, .559 seconds off fast-qualifier Donny Schatz’s pace. Chad
qualified for the 35-lap “A” Feature with a sixth-place finish in the
Second Heat Race.
“We didn’t have a
fantastic night,” Hillier said. “We just didn’t lay down a very good
qualifying lap … I missed the corner a little bit. In the heat race, we
were fortunate that ‘Haud’ (Jac
Haudenschild) got spun out with a couple (of
laps) to go. We were able to transfer out of the heat, but I couldn’t do
much with it in the ‘A’ main. I didn’t have much corner speed and we
couldn’t roll through the corner very well. There wasn’t a whole lot of
passing going on in the heat. If somebody made a mistake you could get by
them, but most guys just ran around the middle or the top.”
Hillier, who started
outside the 10th row in the main event, fell behind former Selma
Shell Racing teammate Paul McMahan during the opening lap. Two other
drivers also passed Chad
during the race’s early stages before he raced back into 20th
place.
“I think we just missed
the setup in the feature,” Hillier said. “I’m sure some guys were moving
around in the feature but, from what I saw, if you slipped up out of the
corner, guys would drive by you. You had to have a pretty nice car to roll through
the corner to make up any speed on anybody. We just kept fighting to get
the car to get locked down through the corner. No matter where I ran on the
track or tried to change my entry point or how fast or slow I went into the
corner, it still skated out on the exit. There was just no drive on the
exit.”
Hillier and his DIRT
Inc. teammates will exit the United States for several days to race with
the World of Outlaws in the Oil
City Cup at Castrol Raceway in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada,
Friday and Saturday.
“I don’t know if
they’ve changed anything at the racetrack since I used to go up and run 360
races there a few years ago,” Chad said. “It can be pretty
racy. It has decent straightaways and tight
corners, and I’m sure they’re still doing a good job with the track. I have
quite a few friends there who used to come down and race on the West Coast
and I’d race up there with them, so it will be good to catch up with them.
We look forward to every race, but we’re happy to have some behind us and
look forward to seeing some like this one coming up.”
