Hillier Finishes 24th at Clay County
Fair Speedway
SPENCER, IA (September 12) – Chad Hillier
and his DIRT Inc. teammates made a rookie mistake before Wednesday’s World
of Outlaws “A” Feature at Clay County Fair Speedway.

Rookie of the Year contender and his crew tightened the setup on the #5c
DIRT Inc. Maxim because they believed the racing surface at the 3/8-mile
oval would be slick during the 30-lap main event. When the racetrack didn’t
change as much as he thought it would, Hillier finished 24th.
“We were actually
pretty good until feature time,” Chad said. “We made a few
changes, but they were in the wrong direction. We snugged it up a little
too much when we should have stayed freer. The corners stayed with us all
night. It slicked off a little, but not as much as we thought it would. We
should have made a gear change, too.
“We shouldn’t have done
what we did, but we thought we needed to try a few things to get better. It
just didn’t work for the way the track was. If the track had slicked off,
it would have been really good. When it didn’t slick off, we were just too
tight. We didn’t make good calls, but we learned from our mistakes.”
Hillier was the 19th-fastest
qualifier in the 32-car field with a 13.959-second lap, only .3 seconds off
Jason Solwold’s pace-setting lap.
“We had a time that was
close to the inversion (the top 16),” Chad said. “It was pretty close
from 10th on back (only .12 seconds separated the 10th-
and 20th-fastest qualifiers). A push truck came out on front of
us on the first lap. They gave us another lap later – after we took our
second lap – but it would have been nice to get two laps back-to-back.
“We made a few changes
for the heat race, and we were pretty good there. We were glad to make
through out heat into the feature.”
Hillier and his DIRT
Inc. teammates are looking forward to Friday’s race at Heartland Park
Topeka.
“It (Clay County Fair
Speedway) is a nice place,” Chad
said. “I hear Heartland
Park is a nice
facility, too. Hopefully, they get a good crowd and it’s a good night for
everybody. We want to take what we learned at Clay
County and put
it to good use Friday.”
