Qualifying Woes Plague Hillier in National Opener

MECHANICSBURG, PA (September 28) – Qualifying in the fourth set of time trials certainly wasn’t the place to be Friday when the World of Outlaws opened the 45th Annual National Open at Williams Grove Speedway.

Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year contender Chad Hillier was in that fourth set, and paid the price for it throughout the evening. Driving the #5C DIRT Inc. Maxim around the legendary half-mile oval in 17.475-seconds, he was 28th-fastest in the 56-car field and .534 seconds off fast-qualifier Jason Solwold’s pace.

“It was a tough night and, then again, it wasn’t,” Chad said. “Considering how we’ve run at Williams Grove in the past, I consider it a better night. I qualified a little bit better and we had a pretty decent car; we just didn’t into the transfer spots.

“For when we went out, we weren’t too bad. Most of the quick guys went out early; there were only four or five who went after me who were quicker. We were in the fourth (last) set, and the track slowed down pretty quickly in qualifying. The track get getting wider and wider and it started to slick off in three and four as qualifying went on. The track came in pretty quick and went away pretty quick. All in all, it was a good, wide racetrack which made for a good night of racing.

The only driver to win championships in all three sprint car divisions at Skagit Speedway started near the rear of the Fourth Heat Race and the “B” Feature and finished seventh and 14th, respectively.

“We fell back a little on the start in the ‘B,’ but we passed a few cars back. Our motor ran well; we were pleased with it. We weren’t too far off. We have to get our lines right and I think we were a little off on a gear.”

Hillier and his DIRT Inc. teammates expect a better performance Saturday in the 45th Annual Williams Grove National Open finale.

“Hopefully, if we can get a good pill draw Saturday, we’ll get a good qualifying lap and things will change for the better and we’ll make the show and have a good run,” Hillier said. “We’re going to go back with the same game plan and try to improve on it.”
