Steering Problems Turn Hillier South at Manzy
PHOENIX, AZ (October
19) – Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year contender Chad Hillier was on his
way to qualifying for Friday’s World of Outlaws “A” Feature at Manzanita Speedway, but a power steering malfunction in
the #5c DIRT Inc. Maxim kept him from transferring.
“It was pretty
frustrating,” Chad
said. “We were leading for a while and (Jason) Campbell got by us. We were running a
strong second when the power steering blew. It pumped all the fluid out of
it and I could hardly steer it.
“It was a bummer
because we were definitely going to transfer. We were pretty good all night
– we had a decent car, the motor was running good and everything was
working well – but a $20 part gave out. You just never know when something
like that is going to happen.”
Hillier finished fifth
in the last-chance race for the second straight time, 1.136 seconds behind
1999 Rookie of the Year Tim Shaffer.
The only driver to win
championships in all three sprint car divisions at Skagit Speedway circled Manzanita’s historic semi-banked, ˝-mile oval in 15.778
seconds, making him the 21st-fastest in the 33-car field and
only .366 seconds off fast-qualifier Jason Solwold’s pace.
“We had a pretty decent
qualifying time,” Chad
said. “It wasn’t quite where it needed to be, but we were close. We needed
another tenth (of a second) and we’d have been sitting pretty good.”
Hillier was also one
spot short of qualifying for the “A” Feature in the First Heat Race. He
finished sixth, .844 seconds behind 1986 Rookie of the Year Johnny Herrera.
Hillier and his DIRT
Inc. teammates will be back in action Saturday in the World of Outlaws race
at Perris Auto Speedway in Perris, CA.
“We’re just going to
put it behind us and look forward to the Perris race,” Chad said.
“It’s a nice place and it’s pretty racy. We just want to get qualified well
and hope everything clicks and we have a good night.”
