‘B’ Feature Crash Ends World Finals for Hillier
CONCORD, NC (November
3) – Chad Hillier’s dream of ending his rookie season with a strong finish
turned into a nightmare Saturday at The Dirt Track @ Lowe’s Motor Speedway.
Hillier, who started
outside the front row in the “B” Feature, was challenging pole-sitter Terry
McCarl for the lead when the #5c DIRT Inc. Maxim
bounced off an infield barrier and collided with Greg Wilson. Unable to
restart the race, Hillier ended his first full year with the World of
Outlaws in 17th place in the last-chance showdown.
“We had a good starting
spot in the ‘B’ and had a good shot at getting out (qualifying for the main
event), but I misjudged one of the Styrofoam pylons in the infield and hit
it with the left front,” Chad
said. “It messed up the nose wing and I went across the racetrack and
collected Wilson , and that was the end of it. We would have had to gone
to the work area and change the nose wing and the front axle, so it would
have been really tough to finish in the top four in 12 laps. It was a
bummer, definitely not the way we wanted to end the season.
“Everything was going
pretty well up to that point. I just made a mistake and I can’t go back and
do it again, unfortunately. It’s not a video game; you can’t hit restart.”
Hillier’s 12.897-second
lap in Thursday’s qualifying session gave him the third row inside starting
position in Saturday’s Third Heat Race. He fell behind fellow rookie Sam Hafertepe Jr. and Wilson during the opening lap,
however, and finished in sixth place, 1.619 seconds behind World of Outlaws
veteran Craig Dollansky.
“We weren’t able to get
out of the heat,” Chad
said. “We didn’t have the best start and fell to sixth and finished sixth.”
Hillier and his DIRT
Inc. teammates are looking forward to Monday’s World of Outlaws Banquet.
“It will be good to
visit with everybody for one last time before we head home,” Chad said.
“It will be a long ride home (to Burlington , WA ), but we’ll get there.
“It’s been a long year,
and it wouldn’t have been possible if not for the efforts of Travis (Van
Dam), Pete (Stephens) and Dave (DeWitt), of course,” Chad said.
“I also want to thank Jansma Construction and
H.B. Jaeger, and our product sponsors – Fast Wings, Maxim Chassis, Pro
Shocks and Weld Racing – for all their help.”
