Hillier’s ‘A’ Feature Streak Ends at Huset’s
BRANDON, SD (July 3) – Kevin Gobrecht
Rookie of the Year contender Chad Hillier drove the #5C DIRT Inc. Maxim in
17 straight World of Outlaws “A” Features before Tuesday’s event at Huset’s Speedway.
Hillier, the 22nd-fastest
qualifier in the 37-car field, came close with a seventh-place finish in
the Second Heat Race and a fifth-place run in the “B” Feature, but failed
to race in the “A” Feature for the first time since May 18th at
Williams Grove Speedway. He battled Steve Kinser
through most of the last-chance race, but finished 1.749 seconds behind the
20-time World of Outlaws champion.
“It was close, but no
cigar,” Hillier said. “If we were playing horseshoes or throwing hand
grenades, we’d have been alright. We struggled in the heat and we didn’t
have enough for (Steve) Kinser in the ‘B.’ He
passed us on the second lap with a slide and I had a chance to get back
under him but I couldn’t get it done. I got under him on the next lap, but
didn’t have enough for him, and he kind of drove away from us there at the
end. There wasn’t a whole lot of passing going on, so we decided not to use
a provisional. It wouldn’t have been very beneficial to use our last
provisional. There just wasn’t a whole lot of moving going on.
“Our qualifying lap
wasn’t spectacular. We were 22nd, but we needed to be 16th
or better (for the heat race inversion). That third row is tough. One bad
corner, a guy gets under you and you’re trying to get back into sixth when
you need to be racing for fourth or fifth. It just wasn’t a good night for
us. We didn’t put the whole package together.”
Hillier and DIRT Inc.
are looking forward to Saturday’s World of Outlaws event at I-55 Raceway in Pevely ,
MO. The race will be
televised on ESPN2
Sunday at 11:30 a.m. (EDT).
“We’re going to work on
it and, hopefully, be better for Pevely,” Hillier said. “I’m sure things will be
better Saturday.”
