Brett
Miller finishes 16th at wingless sprint nationals
By Gary Thomas
Chico, CA - October 15, 2007...18 year-old Brett Miller competed
without the wing for the very first time this past Saturday during Silver
Dollar Speedway’s wingless sprint nationals and brought home a 16th
place finish in the main event. The Chico
youngster sat behind the wheel of the Rod Fauver
owned No. 66 for the night of action that saw 67 cars sign into the back
gate for the final race of the 2007 season at Silver Dollar Speedway.
This was the third straight year that Silver Dollar has hosted the
wingless sprint nationals and it was the largest field seen yet. After
getting used to the car in hot laps Brett came out to qualify and after
going out early on, he was deemed to be too loud and was forced to come out
a re-qualify. His lap of 14.297 placed him 15th quickest out of
the 60 cars that took times. It put the "Catfish" in the third
row of the opening heat race which was stacked with some of top spec sprint
drivers in California.
After getting shuffled back on the start, he came back and moved forward to
finish the heat in sixth.
The main events were lined up by accumulated points and Brett found
himself on the pole of the B-main starting alongside Mark Abouzeid. As the green flag waved on the 15 lap B-main,
Abouzeid got the jump into turn one. Brett
settled into second but took advantage of a miscue by Abouzeid
around lap 10 and was able to take the lead off of turn four. "The
Catfish" led the rest of the way to earn a transfer spot into the main
event. Starting way back in 19th Brett had a long ways to go,
but as the night went on he began to get more comfortable with the car and
was able to move forward in the feature. He was battling up in the top 10
when contact was had with another car, which folded the front end of the 66
machine and put an end to the night with a finish of 16th place.
Brett and the family would like to thank Rod Fauver
and crew for the great car and opportunity to compete at the wingless
sprint nationals. Brett had been wanting to run a wingless car for quite a
while and it was good to get in some competitive racing laps without the
wing in time for the upcoming Chili Bowl Midget Nationals which he’ll be
competing in for the first time come January.
The next scheduled race for Brett and Care Free Pools Racing will be
the 14th annual Trophy Cup at the Tulare Thunderbowl
Raceway in Tulare, Calif. For more news and info on Brett
