Minter Almost Qualifies for Show-Me Showdown Opener

SEDALIA, MO (July 3) – Kathryne Minter came ever so close to qualifying for Tuesday’s American Sprint Car Series Show-Me Showdown opener at Missouri State Fair Speedway.

Minter, racing in her first ASCS on Tour event in almost two months, drove her #13m Concrete Crushing Company J&J into fourth place in the Fifth Heat Race and sixth in the First “B” Feature in her first visit to Missouri State Fair Speedway.

“When I got there, I was a little intimidated because it’s a really big half-mile track,” Kathryne said. “At that point, I knew it would be a learning experience. My car was really fast in hot laps. When I went out for the heat race, I started next to (eventual feature winner) Gary Wright, so I knew I wasn’t going to win. I just thought I would follow him to the best of my ability. I ran third most of the race but, on the last lap, someone (Mike Trent) passed me and I finished fourth. That was sad because I would have qualified for the ‘A’ Main if I had finished third.

“The track had completely changed for the ‘B.’ I started outside the second row. I was running up high in the heat race and I figured I would run there again because you could still see the groove and it wasn’t slicked off. The place to run was down low but, by the time I caught on to it, I couldn’t catch up. After a few laps, it doesn’t matter if you’re in the groove or not because the cars are so spread out on a big track like that. I really wanted to make the ‘A.’”

The Show-Me Showdown opener was also the first event Minter worked with her new crew chief, 2005 ASCS Sooner Region champion Sean McClelland.

“Sean and I are working really well together,” Kathryne said. “Even though it was our first night racing together, we were on the same page. He’s really encouraging and a good teacher. He set up the car perfectly; it was like it guided itself and I just drove it.

“Sean and I agreed that, overall, the night was pretty good. It was exciting to run fourth in the heat race. I saw the white flag and I thought, ‘Holy cow, this is really happening.’”

Minter, who leads the ASCS Gulf South Rookie of the Year race, raved about how well the Goodyear tires she has been testing made her car handle.

“The Goodyear tires were amazing,” Kathryne said. “We had absolutely no problems with them. We were really fast and they stuck really well.”

Minter will be back in action on Independence Day in the ASCS Show-Me Showdown finale – the Inaugural Daniel McMillin Memorial – at Double X Speedway in California , MO.

“I heard that Double X Speedway is smaller than Cowtown (her home track, a ¼-mile oval in Kennedale , TX ), so it must be really small,” Kathryne said. “So, we’re going from a half-mile to a track that’s the smallest I’ve ever run. I was talking to some of the guys and they said, ‘Don’t get used to racing on this big, wide-open track. You can’t do that tomorrow night.’ I’m looking forward to it though; it should be fun.”
