HE SAID IT…

LEVI JONES ON CLENCHING THE 2007 USAC NATIONAL SPRINT CAR SERIES CHAMPIONSHIP:

“When I won my first Sprint Car title in 2005, it was a huge milestone in my career.  Winning a second championship this weekend means just as much as the first title did, maybe more.  I am so glad we were able to finish the season this way.  It’s really exciting to be able to present Chevrolet with its first USAC championship.  The TSR team didn’t give up, and their hard work and dedication put me in a position to win at every event this season.

“It was also great to have Tony (Stewart, team owner) with us for this weekend.  I really appreciate the opportunity he’s given me in being a part of his team, and I’m glad I was able to win a championship for him and the guys.  My family has also been behind me all season long, and having them here in Phoenix for this weekend was pretty special.

“I was really relieved that the championship didn’t go down to Saturday night.  I’m glad we’re able to focus on going after the victory and the money in the finale.  When I won in 2005, it came down to the final night at Manzanita.  Knowing that we have it won heading into tonight’s race is a real confidence booster.  The boss (Stewart) told me Friday night after we won to have fun and to go for the win, and that’s exactly how we’ll approach this race.”

JONES REGARDING THE No. 20 TEAM’S ROUGH DAY AT PHOENIX INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY:

“Starting in the back of the field you always have a greater risk of running into trouble, especially on the starts. We were battling a fuel pump issue and I couldn’t get the car to take off the way I needed it to. In the end, I had to pull in to save the car. We’ve got another race left in the midget series this season and I wanted to have a good car for that event. With Turkey Night coming up next week, we’ll go back and work on our approach. It would be great to get another win in the midget series for Chevrolet and Bass Pro Shops.’

HE SAID IT…

STENHOUSE REGARDING THE TEAM’S SUCCESSFUL RUN AT PHOENIX INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY:

“We were really good on the longer runs. The yellows hurt us a little bit. The car got tight in the first few laps but it got better as the laps went by. I was able to get a really good run on people getting into turn three and that’s where I pass quite a few cars. When I moved into the top-ten, I did it on the outside. They all went to the bottom getting into the corner and I drove around them on the outside. We lost a few spots in the end but for my first time at the track it was a decent finish. I was a little mad at myself after the race because we’d been in the top-10 and  I think we could have gotten into the top-five. I’m glad I was able to put Chevrolet near the front of the field.”

REGARDING THE TEAMS TWO TOP-FIVE FINISHES AT MANZANITA SPEEDWAY:

“On Friday night, we had a pretty good car but we didn’t move forward as much as I would have liked. We made some changes for Saturday and the car was really good. It was a lot of fun battling Dave Darland for the lead. I tried to make the slide job stick but I gave up some ground as we got back into the race and he got back by me. I don’t know if anyone could catch Jerry (Coons, Jr., race winner) he was really fast. I think we had a right rear shock break during the feature. I could feel it as we went through the feature.

“It was great to have Tony (Stewart) with us all weekend. It makes it pretty cool to have such a good weekend with him there. I’m looking forward to heading to Irwindale Speedway next week also. I’ve never run in the Turkey Night Grand Prix. It would be a great way to end the season by getting another win for Chevrolet and Bass Pro Shops in the last race.”

  • Thus., Nov. 8 – Phoenix International Raceway -- (one-mile pavement oval)

HE SAID IT…

TRACY HINES ON MAKING HIS RETURN TO THE SEAT OF THE No. 21 TSR/CHEVROLET/BEAST USAC MIDGET:

“It was great to get back in the seat of a race car after being out for over six months. I can’t say enough about St. Vincent’s Sports Performance and its staff . To come back from the injuries that I had to being able to return to the car says a lot about their dedication and  rehabilitation skills. My trainer, Ralph Reiff, came out with me to Phoenix and I was really glad to have him and the others there for my return. I would have liked to have had a better day on the track but we’ll work on moving forward and getting back on the track in California next week.

“I really want to thank everyone at St. Vincent’s, Tony Stewart Racing, Chevrolet, Bass Pro Shops and all of the others who’ve helped me get back into a race car. The support has been unbelievable and Christa (Hines’s wife) and I really appreciate it.”
